ONION PAKODA/ ONION PAKORAS/ ONION FRITTERS -

Some snacks never go out of fashion. One such is the ever loved Onion Pakoda/ Pakora, anglicised as Onion fritters. It is a popular street food mainly sold by vendors with the push carts or at a tea stall / bakery. It is also sold in popular food joints but the former is more sought after.  What I have personally observed are the ones that are sold in food joints taste much better, also being less expensive.

A small portion of these crisps, a cup of hot coffee (or tea) and soothing music in the background. Oh! The best monsoon companions to add zeal to your lone time. I am certain many of us have had such an occasion to enjoy. But remember to work out after eating. :))))   Ready to drink and eat now !!

Preparation Time: 5 min
Cooking Time: 15 - 20 min
Recipe Level : Easy
Recipe Category : Snacks/ Tea Time
Spice level : Medium/Spicy
Cuisine : Indian
Serves : 4
Calories : 110 cal approximate for 45 gm

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 cup Gram Flour
  • 2 cups Rice Flour
  • 3 Big Onions finely chopped/ sliced thin
  • 5 -6 Green chillies
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped ginger
  • 2 cloves of garlic (optional)
  • 1 tsp Red Chilli powder (adjust to taste)
  • 3 sprigs Curry leaves - chopped
  • Cilantro - chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • Oil for frying

METHOD
  • Heat oil in a Kadai and keep it simmered.
  • In a wide bowl mix together rice flour, gram flour, chilli powder, salt and sugar.
  • Grind ginger and green chillies to make a coarse paste. If using garlic, grind it along. Add it to the mix.
  • Add curry leaves and cilantro. Finally add the chopped onions. Mix using your finger tips to get a semi dry mass.
  • Need not sprinkle water as the onions ooze out sufficient water to wet the mixture. You can check for salt and spice and adjust the mix as per taste.
  • When the oil is hot enough, pinch a little mix and start rubbing it between your fingers in circular motion over the oil to drop tiny bits.
  • Fry until it turns golden brown.
  • Use a laddle to fry it out and leave them to drain their oil off on paper towels.
  • Serve hot with coffee (certainly is a wide choice for many) or tea.
